Discover the Best Ways to Get College Email and Mailing List Info
Colleges provide information via mail and email – in most cases, all you need to do is register! Below I discuss five creative tips for getting college information emails and college information packets in the mail.
1. Register on the College Website
In many cases, the simplest way to get on a college mailing list is to sign up directly on their website. Run a Google search for “(name of college) mailing list” and look for results similar to “join our mailing list” or “request information.” Make sure the website is related to the college you are interested in; then, enter your information, and you’ll be all set! Colleges will send regular emails and mailing updates to teach you about the school and inform you about their application process.
2. Social Media
In this day and age, most colleges have actively run social media accounts which can be a great way to stay up to date with the school and learn more about it. Additionally, during application season, colleges will typically post updates regarding the application process, which is helpful for staying in the loop.
3. Utilize the College Board’s Student Search Service
The College Board is one of the most recognized names in the field of college admissions, and they run a useful service for students interested in learning more about college. With the Student Search Service, interested students can fill out a survey to identify their college interests. If a college matches a student’s interests, they will contact you directly with additional information. The service also provides regular updates regarding the financial aid process and scholarship opportunities.
4. Register When Taking a Standardized Test
When registering for the PSAT, SAT, and other standardized tests related to the college application process, there is often a question asking if you would like to be contacted by colleges. Be on the lookout for these types of questions the next time you register for a standardized test – if you take part, you will receive email updates and letters from colleges with additional information.
5. College Fair
The best way to learn more about colleges in your area is to host a college fair. During these events, representatives from various colleges will attend and provide information (and sometimes freebies!) about their schools. These events can be a great way to learn more about multiple schools at once. Additionally, if you are interested in the schools at the fair, they will almost certainly have a registration list for you to opt into to receive additional information. To find college fairs, Google “college fairs near me,” or check out the College Fair Guide.
How To Keep Your College Letter Organized And What To Do With Your College Letter
When signing up for college letters, you may be overwhelmed by the number of resources you receive. Follow these tips to stay organized:
- For the physical mail you will receive, use some type of organizational system (expandable file folders work great!) where you can store all the information from each school.
- For email, it’s a good idea to create a “college information” folder where you can move all your school-related emails – you can even set up automatic filtering and labeling in Gmail. If you’re looking for more organization, you might consider creating a folder for each school that sends you information.
- Keep a list of all the schools you request information from and their associated websites. That way, when you have made your college decision and no longer need additional information, you can quickly and easily navigate to the website and pull up your contact details.
- When you receive all of your campus communications, you need a way to synthesize that information. Spreadsheets can work well for this – include fields like “location,” “annual cost,” “acceptance rate,” and other criteria that are important to you. As you receive information from various colleges, fill in the fields for each school. This will make it easier to compare colleges and decide which is the best fit for you.
- You may also find project management tools like Notion, Trello, and Asana useful for tracking various deadlines.
Why Being Added to a College Email List Can Be Beneficial
Adding to a college email list can be a big help for students and parents navigating the college admissions process. Here are some of the main ways:
1. Exclusive Early Access
Mailing lists often share application tips, scholarships, and events that are not widely advertised. Additionally, colleges often announce new majors, programs, or facilities via their email lists.
2. Connectedness to Campus Life
Mailing lists can provide a glimpse into school culture, featuring student testimonials, faculty profiles, and extracurricular activities. You’ll also learn more about available academic programs, extracurricular activities, and support services.
3. Learn About Scholarships and Financial Aid
Many colleges use their email lists to promote scholarship opportunities, grants, and financial aid deadlines.
4. Stay Informed About Deadlines and Events
The college’s email list provides updates on application deadlines, open houses, virtual tours, and information sessions. Keeping up to date on these developments can help ensure students don’t miss important opportunities to engage with college.
Get On College Mailing Lists And Find Your Dream School
Deciding which colleges you want to apply to (and ultimately get into!) can seem like a daunting process. However, with an organized approach, finding college information and making informed decisions can be easy. By following the tips above, you will be equipped with all the information you need to narrow down your college search.
